Shannon M Howell
Ph.D Candidate, USC Department of Chemistry
Shannon Howell received her B.S. in Chemistry from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 2006. Her undergraduate research focused on the correlation between food irradiation and free radicals damage on proteins and lipids, confirming her aspiration to pursue a professional research career. She was accepted to the PhD program in Chemistry at the University of Southern California in 2006 where she has excelled in teaching and research and will receive her PhD in May 2013. She was awarded teacher of the year at USC in May 2007 and was the president of the Women in Chemistry Club from 2007-2010, during which time she organized a program to introduce science to elementary kids. Because of this activity she was awarded the Women in Science and Engineering (W.I.S.E.) award twice during her graduate career at USC. Her research focus at USC is peptide and protein design using in vitro selection experiments. Shannon has developed cyclic protease resistant peptides that could potentially replace small molecules and be used as novel cancer therapeutics and has successfully created peptides specific for EGFR positive cancers. Small molecules dominate the market today and posses a major limitation: they do not break down in the body since they are foreign resulting in many side effects. Peptides, on the other hand, are made up of amino acids and will be cleared from the body naturally once broken down. After receiving her PhD she plans on obtaining a postdoctoral research appointment where she will continue her studies in cancer biology and possibly branch out into neuroscience. Regardless of where she ends ups, her goals are always the same: to develop her skills as a scientist, push her problem solving abilities, and be exposed to new methods and ideas.
Shannon has also excelled athletically. She was a competitive swimmer when she was young winning multiple events at the Junior Olympics and turning in record setting performances at the Missouri Show-Me Games. Her swimming skills were proven very useful later on when she started doing triathlons in 2009. She has done extremely well in the multi-sport and has achieved the podium multiple times. In 2012 she qualified for the USAT Olympic distance nationals in Burlington Vermont. Here she placed in the top 18 and reserved her spot on Team USA. She will represent Team USA in the World Championships in London in September 2013. She is also a member of the USC cycling team. She holds a USAC Cat 1 license in XC mountain biking and Cat 2 in road biking. She was the California State Endurance Mountain Bike champion in her Cat 1 age group in 2012.
